The Shift Towards Electronic Assessment

We’ve been involved in the development of e-assessment systems for many years. The embrace of electronic assessment of professional assessment has notably increased in recent years. While this has partially been driven by the global impact of Covid-19, this increase also reflects a broader trend in the digital transformation of education and professional development. It signifies a shift towards utilising technology to optimise learning and assessment, promoting lifelong learning and enabling individuals to showcase their skills and knowledge in a digital era.

Proven Benefits for Engagement

Research carried out on an e-portfolio website which we produced for the midwifery programme at Bournemouth University, OPALBU (Online Practice Assessment for Learning at Bournemouth University), demonstrates the benefits of adopting an electronic approach to assessment:

  • The number of interviews that had comments from students which were accurately date and time stamped increased from 32% to 100%
  • The average word-count of final interviews carried out by mentors more than doubled from approximately 68 words to 162 words
  • Areas for future learning highlighted by mentors increased by almost three times from 24% to 60% and were more directive and specific

E-assessment for Universities

During the Covid-19 pandemic, switching to online systems enabled tutors to continue to support students in practice while working from home.

Configurable and Easily Updated

Our sites are fully configurable, allowing us to quickly make changes when required. For instance, we efficiently updated our systems to reflect the new measures introduced by the Nursing and Midwifery Council in response to emergency situations.

Accessible from Multiple Devices

The sites we develop are accessible from PC, tablet, and mobile devices. This enables users to instantly record practice experience and practice-based formative and summative assessments undertaken throughout their training. Users are able to interact with evidence in order to create a comprehensive and reliable account of a student’s journey on a defined pathway.
